VCU OAP x rvaMORE Northbank Trailwork
The workday will run from 9am until noon.
Bring your own water bottle, we will bring a 5 gallon water dispenser to share.
This volunteer opportunity involves manual labor: digging, lifting, carrying pieces of lumber, and other "yardwork" style efforts.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
Bring your own pair of work gloves.
We will provide all tools.
There is plentiful street parking in the neighborhood around the trail head - please be considerate of the parking needs of the adjacent neighbors.
Meet curbside at the Northbank trailhead located at the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Hampton Street. There is plenty of street parking available closer to the Texas Beach parking area, but please be respectful of the neighbors and do not block driveways. Maymont is having a large event the same morning so be aware: you may need to park several blocks away and walk over.
We will have coffee and donuts to share before the workday. Arrive a little early and sign in with a volunteer, grab a cup of coffee and a treat, and we will hike in to the project site together. The JRPS Trail Crew will go over the work needed, and our project will begin.
The JRPS Trail Crew will work with volunteers and disassemble and remove the ramp from the bottom up, disposing of the old planks at street level.
After ramp disassembly and disposal, volunteers will point their efforts toward finishing a new section of natural surfaced trail to restore access to riders, runners, hikers, and other trail users.
The James River Park System Invasive Plant Management team will be working in the area two weeks prior to our volunteer workday, removing bamboo in flagged areas.
Sign up here to help us with this vital second step of the project: removing the wooden ramp and building a new section of sustainable trail.
FEAR NOT, loyal Northbank lovers!
There will be no removal or change to the rock feature named "stairway to heaven" above the project: our workday instead focuses on the canal-level wooden ramp below it.
Paralyzed Veterans of American - POCO Ride
rvaMORE supports the Paralyzed Veterans of America for two ride camps annually at Pocahontas State Park, providing ride guides to accompany PVA riders and program participants. For more information, and to sign up to volunteer as a ride escort, please head to the website:
VCU OAP x FOJRPS x JRPS ISM Team Northbank workday
• What: We are removing the bamboo stand that's on Northbank Trail right after the Maymont Ramp
* Why?: Golden bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea) is a medium level invasive species in Virginia. It hadn't been a top priority for the ISM team compared with some of our other park sites, buuuut...
• How: We're collaborating with the JRPS Trail Crew and @rvamore as they work to reroute this strip of trail for sustainability purposes. Since a lot of work is going to be done down there in a couple weeks anyway, we figured what better time to clear this mess out?
When: Saturday, April 11 from 9am-12pm
Register on our website at jamesriverpark.org and navigate to the Calendar page! Your help is invaluable to our work! Come make a difference and help our trails and ecosystems out!

Monstercross! at Pocahontas State Park
Find us on the Swift Creek Trails side of the park, set up with coffee and donuts to share with event participants and supporters. Come cheer on the riders tackling the 25 and 50 mile courses!
TRAILWORK: Pinecamp
We’re back at Pine Camp in Richmond’s Northside for this months JPRS trailwork day - working on two small reroutes and tackling a little bit of Invasive Plant Species management.
IPSM work and Trailwork go hand in hand in our parks - as fast growing Privet quickly narrows the trails and obscures the clarity of line of sight for users.
Meet us at the Pine Camp Community Center at 9:00am (come a tiny bit earlier and grab coffee and donuts) and we’ll discuss the project, then hike into the reroute sites together.
TRAILWORK: Pocahontas
With a vendor scheduled to install a special trail armoring product soon, we need your help finishing and packing the newly improved “Freight Line” dual slalom.
The weather has not been helpful lately, too-wet conditions have made finishing work difficult - but this weekend should be perfect for it! We hope you can join us as we work to wrap up this huge project.
Meet at the main Courthouse Road Parking area (7298 Courthouse Road, Chesterfield VA) for coffee and donuts, workday discussion, and then we will hike into the trail section together.
Trailwork at Pine Camp
Trailwork at Pine Camp, please meet at the Community Center parking lot.
For this workday, we will be removing trash from two unoccupied encampments on park property, restoring the area to its natural state. After the litter removal project, we will address an invasive plant project, helping remove fast-growing Privet that hinders clear lines of sight on the trail networks. Please bring clothes you don't getting dirty, sturdy work gloves and wear closed toe shoes. We will provide coffee and donuts at the beginning of the workday, please bring your own water container and we will bring a portable jug for refills.
