February 9 was the first trail work day following the MOU between the Heart of Va. Scout Reservation and Richmond MORE. There was a preliminary meeting held to discuss plans for proceeding forward based on the trail assessment by Nathan Burrell. In that meeting we developed a priority list for the top three projects to get us started. The main priority for the day was to clean up the trail and prepare it for more scheduled rides.
The outcome was great and the turnout was good. We cleared the trail and followed up with a ride on a sunny but cool day. We are looking forward now to about seven years of work out there to bring the system up to IMBA standards. We are looking at quite a bit of bridge work so we’ll be needing a good amount of lumber and are hoping to find a lumber sponsor or discount provider of lumber to help us out. We are also looking at some more sustainable forms of creek crossings such as perforated concrete slabs and that would also be helpful to find a business to help with the cost.
The next trail work day will be March 9 where RA-MORE and ASR will team up again; the main project will be removing and rerouting the trail at the A-frame bridge crossing a stream (some good carpenters would be very helpful here). If we have a good enough turnout, we could have a crew flag a reroute on a section of fall line trail that desparately needs to be reclaimed.
Our thanks to all who came out to help and look forward to continued help and involvement from the mountain biking community.
