The City of Richmond Trail Care Crew and Richmond MORE volunteers were busy this winter. Here’s a summary of their trail building accomplishments.

Belle Isle saw the construction of the Lost Garden (thanks for taking the lead on this Marty) under the southside access bridge. This is the longest rock garden in the area. A new singletrack trail has been built to the top of the island. Starting at the end of the Lost Garden, follow the access road towards the Hydro Plant then start climbing up the newly constructed switchback all the way to the top. This completes a nice single track loop around and on top of the island.

Heading onto Buttermilk, everyone has had a chance to check out the extended boardwalk and skinnies by now and loves the challenge. The boardwalk extension keeps you off of a poorly draining section of ground and the skinnies are just for fun. Speaking of drainage, the small rock area just after the boardwalk should keep the mud pit from forming there after a rainstorm. Buttermilk Heights also saw a drainage fix with some added rock. A team of VCU students helped replace the trail from Reedy Creek to Riverside Dr. The final project of the year was replacing the washed out 42nd Street access trail with a series of switchbacks.

In Forest Hill Park, the Ewok Bridges were rehabbed by removing the rotten logs and replacing them with ladder bridges. There was also some trail corridor narrowing around rooty sections in the northeast corner of the park.

Finally, the North Trail saw several fixes and reroutes. The trail in Northbank Park where it passes under pedestrian bridge was rerouted to fix some erosion problems. Heading east, the Riverview Switchbacks were rehabbed and there were some small reroutes in the area of Hollywood Cemetery.
